The bassoon is a long, wooden instrument with straight tubes. It helps to be tall or sit on a stack of books when playing. It plays deep, silly sounds—like a sleepy bear! It uses a “double reed” to make music. That means two little pieces of wood vibrating together!
With over 8 feet of tubing folded into a long wooden body, it is known for its rich, expressive tone. It has a large range of notes even extending into the treble clef however, it plays mostly tenor and bass notes so the music for the bassoon is written in bass clef.
Common in orchestras and wind ensembles, the Bassoon is the largest of the woodwind instruments.
